Wolverhampton Wanderer midfielder Stephen Ward will miss the rest of the season after undergoing an operation. The 24-year-old has been suffering discomfort in the same area of the knee that was operated on back in September, and another surgery was deemed necessary in order to avoid anymore damage.

Manager Mick McCarthy said on the league’s official website, “Wardy has had an operation. It’s something that needed to be done as he’s been struggling with the problem for a while."

The 24-year-old could do little to hide his frustration by the unfortunate timing of the injury, having been given his first ever call-up to the Republic of Ireland team, saying: "This has been troubling me all season and has got to be done. There was talk about maybe delaying the operation so I could join up with Ireland, but the specialist said to carry on could make it worse.”
