Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has reflected on the club’s exit from the Europa League at the hands of Atletico Madrid and described the current season as one where everything has been against his team. Benitez could have done much to rescue what has been a disappointing campaign by winning the Europa League, but a 2-1 victory at Anfield in extra time was not enough as Atletico advanced on the away goal rule.

"We were there," said Benitez to the club’s official site, "but to concede a goal was disappointing. They were dangerous on the counter attack and it was a very good game." Those words though will be small comfort for Liverpool having come so close to reaching a European final.

The Spanish boss then went on to say that, "it is a season where everything has been against us, but you could see the players working so hard and you have to be proud of them."

Liverpool will now face Chelsea at Anfield in a bizarre game which could see a win for The Reds go a long way towards handing bitter rivals Manchester United a 19th league title.
