Xavi has been hailed as the best midfielder in Barcelona’s history by coach Pep Guardiola. The Barca supremo was speaking following the Camp Nou side’s 4-1 win over Villarreal, a victory which keeps them firmly on track to retain La Liga.
The midfield general had picked up a slight calf injury in the Champions League game against Inter and was fully aware that any complications sustained against Villarreal could put his Spain World Cup trip in doubt. However, Xavi was willing to risk that to help Barcelona bounce back from their European exit.
"He had an injury that if he aggravated it could force him to miss the World Cup", explained Guardiola. "He is committed to this club and is an example for everyone. For this reason he deserves to be recognised as the greatest midfielder in the club’s history."
