Barcelona coach Josep Guardiola is keen for his side to recover from their Champions League exit by not just winning La Liga, but setting a new club record. Currently the Camp Nou giants have a massive 90 points with three games still left to play, making 99 points a possibility.

At present Guardiola’s men stand level with the points total set in the 1996/97 season by Sir Bobby Robson’s Barcelona outfit, and just one more point will see that points record smashed. Not since 1997 have Barcelona amassed more than 90 points. All the more impressive is that Robson’s achievement was set in a 42 game La Liga, not 38 as now.

The absolute points record is still held by Fabio Capello Real Madrid side of 1996/97, who collected 92 points in the 42 game season. Should Barcelona be able to smash that record then it will serve as some consolation for their European exit.
