Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill has claimed his side have had a marvellous season despite having no silverware to show for their efforts. The Villains made two appearances at Wembley this campaign, getting knocked out of the FA Cup semi-finals, and losing the Carling Cup final.

Despite such disappointment, the Irishman expresses his delight at the development of his players, saying on the club’s website, “I‘ve been delighted with the players. Some players have come right through to the fore. Some are vying for international honours and I’m hoping one or two will climb onto the plane for South Africa, which I think they would richly deserve.”

Villa’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League were virtually ended when they lost to Manchester City at the weekend, but O’Neill is still largely impressed with how his team is improving.
