According to manager Arsene Wenger, acquiring players these days has become more of a gamble. With more teams in the know about potential stars all over the world, clubs such as Arsenal need to act quickly in order sign coveted players – a situation that has meant a more risky approach from management.

"It (transfer market) is not any more as it was 15 or 20 years ago," Wenger explains on the club’s official website. “Everybody knows everybody now. It is more about shrewd buying now in taking a gamble than in discovering somebody."

Although the Frenchman showed he still has an eye for talent when he signed impressive defender Thomas Vermaelen in the summer, he admits he wasn’t entirely convinced the Belgian international would cope so well in the Premier League.
