Liverpool striker Fernando Torres is facing a race against time to be fit for the World Cup in June, as he attempts to recover from a recurrent knee injury. Although the club’s Head of Sports Medicine and Sports Science, Peter Brukner, feels the Spaniard is “tremendously committed to his rehab” and that “if anyone can recover from an injury, he can,” there remains a doubt whether he will be fit in time.

Even with a sense of optimism, it seems the talismanic striker is destined for only a brief stint in South Africa should he recover in time, as Brukner continued, "You can’t be absolutely certain of anything but at this stage, if he continues to progress the way he is, he should be fit to play at some stage during the World Cup.”

Eyes will certainly be on manager Vicente del Bosque, who will have to decide whether to gamble on Torres proving his fitness in time for the World Cup.
