Manchester United are looking likely to lose their chance to complete a historic Premier League four-peat this weekend, as Chelsea only need to beat Wigan Athletic in order to be crowned champions. Although there is still a slim chance of some last day drama should the Blues fail to win, midfielder Darren Fletcher has already pointed at his team’s unlucky spell of injuries as the reason behind the club’s disappointing season.

"At one stage we had one fit defender in the squad. No team has been able to cope with that,” Fletcher explained on the league’s official website. “We had three or four games in that position and ultimately it has cost us. If you are going to win the title in England you need a settled defence."

With both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand struggling throughout the season with fitness problems, their usually solid defensive partnership has been missed. Despite the bad luck, Man Utd are still on the verge of losing out on a massive opportunity to write a piece of football history.
