Valencia have a summer of tough decisions ahead of them as they grapple with large debts, an unfinished new stadium, and thoughts of keeping the team competitive for next season.
Recent reports have suggested that Valencia believe they may be able to survive the summer – and pay off some debt – simply by selling Juan Mata to Barcelona. Such an option would see star duo David Villa and David Silva remaining at the Mestalla. However, in the past few days more extreme options have been explored.
Valencia remain keen to resume the building of their new stadium this June, after work stopped due to cash flow problems, but money needs to be raised. The preferred option is to sell off their existing stadium, which would be expected to bring in the €150M needed for the project. However, Valencia also need to pay down some debt, and there is every possibility selling the current Mestalla in present circumstances will be difficult.
Therefore the extreme option of selling David Villa, David Silva and Juan Mata, to bring in around €90M, is beginning to be considered, although it is too soon to predict which way Valencia will go.
