Rafael Benitez has left an element of doubt over his future as Liverpool boss by saying after yesterday’s end of season clash with Hull City that he would remain at the club "if everything is fine". With the Merseyside club having missed out on the Champions League by finishing seventh – just two points ahead of Everton – and their owners seeking to sell, it does appear that fine is not a word which would apply to the situation at Anfield.

Nevertheless, Benitez did seem to hint at a fondness for Liverpool which could yet see him remain.

"I wanted to stay and would like to stay if everything is fine. It would not be easy to leave. It has always been the same situation, I decided to come here because of the fans and the club."

The Spanish boss recently met with Liverpool’s new chairman Martin Broughton, but as Broughton has been brought in to simply supervise a sale, it is unclear how much power he has to meet any of Benitez’s demands for strengthening the squad over the summer.
