Arsene Wenger admitted that although his team enjoyed a very impressive attacking season, the defence’s campaign “was fair.” The Gunners conceded 41 goals in the league, a total that the Frenchman was adamant needed changing.

The long-serving manager’s disappointment in the defence is looking likely to produce a summer signing to boost the struggling backline, as he said on the club’s official website, “During the transfer window, I want to keep our strength up front, but get one more player to bring power to our defensive team.”

Last summer’s signing Thomas Vermaelen has proven to be an instant hit at Arsenal, but with William Gallas’ future still unclear, Wenger will likely be needing to add a centre-defender in the transfer window.
