Birmingham City have confirmed that they will not be making Christian Benitez’s loan move from Mexican club Santos Laguna permanent. Speaking on the league’s official website, manager Alex McLeish admits that although there was “an agreement that the previous board put in place,” the club felt the £7M asking price “was just too rich.”
Benitez scored four times in 36 appearances for Birmingham in a season-long loan deal. The Ecuadorian was a constant threat in attack and was admired by McLeish, but in the end the St. Andrews outfit felt their funds could be used more wisely.
Birmingham are expected to revamp their squad in the summer, as the team prepares for their second season back in the Premier League. The club has already parted ways with Lee Carsley, Gary McSheffrey, Franck Queudrue and Gregory Vignal.
