After securing the title with a 4-0 romp over Real Valladolid last night Barcelona’s players lined up to salute their achievement. With Real Madrid stumbling to a 1-1 draw away at Malaga, Barcelona win La Liga by three points in the end in what has been a remarkable season in Spain.
Addressing the fans Barcelona’s players reflected on a special campaign, with Thierry Henry remarking: "I wanted to say that winning the title with 99 points is something I have never seen in my life..Playing at this club is very special!"
Midfield general Xavi went on to hail the current Barcelona side as "the best in the world" and Maxwell, a surprise revelation at the Camp Nou remarked, "This group deserves everything that has happened to it this year."
Barcelona have scored not just a La Liga win this season, but also a record for doing so. Having taken a huge 99 points from 38 games, the Camp Nou giants took 86.8% of all available points – a feat none have matched. Even the great Real Madrid team of 1960/61 who took 86.6% of the points on offer. Establishing a new record and retaining La Liga will at least go some way to making up for the disappointment of not defending their Champions League title successfully.
