Manchester United’s midfield maestro Paul Scholes turned down England manager Fabio Capello, when he was asked to return to the Three Lions squad for the coming World Cup. Unlike Liverpool’s Jamie Carragher, the 35-year-old has chosen to remain in international retirement, a decision that Sir Alex Ferguson revealed he expected.

I wasn’t surprised by Paul’s decision,” the Man Utd manager admitted on premierleague.com. “He made his decision [to retire] years ago. I think Fabio did the right thing in giving him the opportunity to come back, but Paul is established in his family life and I don’t think it was a goal. He spoke to me about it and I told him to go with his gut instinct and his gut instinct was to stay put."

Despite being in the twilight of his career, the talented player is still considered one of the best in his position in the Premier League.
