Sevilla ruined Atletico Madrid’s chances of completing a historic double last night, as they prevailed 2-0 in the Copa del Rey finals. Just a week after experiencing the jubilation of being crowned Europa League winners, the Madrid club had to endure the disappointment of barely missing out on a massive feat.
An early goal from Diego Capel calmed Sevilla’s nerves at the beginning of the match, but the leading side would have to wait until the very end before Jesus Navas sealed it in the first minute of stoppage time.
Atletico Madrid’s strike duo of Diego Forlan and Sergio Aguero were constantly a threat to the Sevilla backline, but defender Sébastien Squillaci was particularly effective at keeping the shots out. Winning the Copa del Rey caps off an impressive season for the Sevillistas, who also succeeded in qualifying for the Champions League.
