With Vicente del Bosque set to reveal Spain’s 23-man squad for the World Cup later today, reports in the Spanish press claim they are expecting Barcelona’s first-choice goalkeeper Victor Valdes to once again be overlooked in favour of Villarreal’s Diego Lopez and Liverpool’s Pepe Reina.
Valdes, who has been first-choice keeper at Barca for roughly seven seasons, has remarkably never played for Spain. Despite being named in the provisional 30-man squad, the 28-year-old is expected to be among the seven players left behind.
22-year-old Barca attacker Pedro, who was also included in the 30-man squad, is expected however, unlike Valdes, to be named in the final squad that travels to South Africa in June. The youngster surprised plenty last season, as he unexpectedly exploded for 23 goals in the campaign.
