22-year-old Ryan Shawcross is in high demand this summer, after enjoying another solid season with Stoke City. The young defender is being tracked by opposition teams, not only for his talent, but also for his English nationality. With new rules being enforced in the Premier League that requires teams to field at least eight “home-grown” players in a squad of 25, talents such as Shawcross have had their value jack up.
“We voted for the new rule because we believe it will be good for football and will help teams to develop their own players," Potters chairman Peter Coates said. "I am all for young English players being in demand, but we rate Ryan very highly and I am sure he will be playing for us next season."
Shawcross is currently under contract with Stoke until 2014, but that hasn’t stopped interest from other clubs.
