Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard reveals that he has been harassing team-mate Jamie Carragher to consider returning for England ever since the centre-back announced his international retirement. After three years, the Reds skipper has finally achieved his goal to bring back the veteran defender, who is included in Fabio Capello’s provisional 30-man squad.

"I put a lot of work in!" Gerrard admitted on the club’s official website. "I spoke to Jamie all the time, right from the time he took the decision to step down from the squad. I wanted Carra here because he is a top player but from a personal perspective it is nice because he is a good friend."

Carragher walked away from England after a frustrating World Cup campaign that saw him play sparingly, and even less in his preferred central position in defence. Capello has since convinced the veteran to return, as the Three Lions aim to make a splash in South Africa.
