Liverpool have confirmed that defender Fabio Aurelio will be leaving the club in the summer, after a deal for a contract extension failed to be reached. The Brazilian left-back moved to the Premier League side from Valencia in 2006, but failed to hold down a regular spot as he continued to experience injury problems throughout his four season spell.
“We had been trying to work something out with regards an extension but it was a pity that we couldn’t. He has given us absolutely fantastic service”, manager Rafael Benitez said told the club’s official website. “Fabio is a top professional, a great player and a really good lad. I mean every single word I say about him.”
The 30-year-old was the preferred first-choice left-back of Benitez, but his constant fitness problems limited his appearances for the club, and consequently cost him his future with the Reds.
