France are congratulating themselves on having won the right to host Euro 2016 yesterday. The French bid beat off tough competition from both Italy and Turkey. In the end, following the Italians dropping out of the first round of voting, France carried the day. The decision was close though, with just one vote giving France the hosting rights over the Turks.
"I want to thank our friends from Italy and Turkey", said French Football Federation president Jean-Pierre Escalettes. "I feel for them and the feelings of frustration and sadness after months of work and I wish Italian and Turkish football good luck."
France's bid was always one of the strongest and with such government support to guarantee the tournament, UEFA president Michel Platini's country were always the favourites to get the nod.
