Liverpool striker Fernando Torres' position at the club has allegedly been called into question by the club's chairman Martin Broughton. Reports suggest that Broughton told Sky Sports News presenter Charlotte Jackson that it could take up to three years to turn the Anfield club's fortunes around and it may be better for Torres if he left.
Jackson, a Liverpool fan, claimed in an interview with the Mail on Sunday's magazine: "I met Martin Broughton and he refused to tell me we weren't going to sell Torres. He said 'At this moment he's still on board, but it is going to take three years to turn the club around, and at his age…."
The reports will add to the growing gloom around Anfield and although co-owner Tom Hicks recently stated he would back coach Rafael Benitez in the summer transfer market, fans fear the Spaniard will have little money to spend in an attempt to reclaim a top four spot next season.
