Former third-choice goalkeeper Julio Sergio has agreed to sign a four-year extension with AS Roma, after enjoying his first regular role in the side last season. The 31-year-old moved from Brazilian side America in 2006, but only experienced his debut with Italian giants in the last campaign.

Once described as “the best third-choice goalkeeper in the world” by former Roma manager Luciano Spalletti, Sergio staked his claim at becoming the club’s number one last season, capitalising on an injury on first-choice keeper Doni, and the dismal form of backup Artur.

Sergio helped Roma to a second place finish in the Serie A last season, ensuring the club will be participating in the UEFA Champions League group stages in the next campaign.
