Signs tonight suggest that Rafael Benitez has been offered a payoff of £3M to leave as Liverpool manager with immediate effect. The Spanish boss, who would be entitled to £16M if the club sacked him and he failed to find another job, has been left in an unenviable position by the proposal.

By offering Benitez a deal to quit Anfield Liverpool have effectively made the former Valencia coach’s position untenable. Should Benitez decide to refuse to walk, he would face a summer and season ahead working for a board and owners he knew wished to see the back of him. Under those circumstances it is also unlikely he would be allowed to see what, albeit limited, transfer funds are available.

The Liverpool hierarchy have been encouraged by a recent poll carried out by the Football Fans Census which suggested only 45% of Reds fans approved of Benitez’s performance this past season. His ability to lead the club back to the Champions League is also doubted, especially in the wake of a guarantee he gave last season that Liverpool would finish in the top four.
