Sven-Goran Eriksson has given his clearest indication yet that he will be a candidate for the job of Liverpool manager. The Swedish coach, currently in charge of the Ivory Coast until the end of the World Cup, would seem to be a top class and proven replacement for Rafael Benitez, unlike other contenders with little experience in charge of big clubs.
"I was shocked when I discovered that Rafa had gone", said Eriksson.
Asked whether he would like to manage Liverpool, Eriksson responded: "I think it is the dream of every coach to do so. My dad was a Reds supporter and in Sweden we watched them every Saturday on TV."
The former Lazio boss also spoke of how, shortly after he began coaching, he managed to get an invite to Liverpool to watch their coaching sessions. "It was an honour for me", said Eriksson, "I’ll never forget that moment."
Eriksson will surely be taken seriously for the post given his record of success in Portugal, Italy and in guiding England to international tournaments with ease. The Swede also has unfinished business in English club football, given the way he was dumped by Manchester City after a promising first season in charge.
