Widely believed to be heading to Real Madrid, there could yet be a twist in the transfer tale of Benfica winger Angel di Maria as Barcelona enter the frame. Reports from Portugal have suggested that the Camp Nou club could make a late bid to snatch the Argentina star from under the noses of their bitter rivals after hearing a move to Madrid is not done and dusted.

Benfica are standing firm, insisting that any buying club meets Di Maria’s €40M buy-out clause. However, Real Madrid are only willing to go to €30M in cash, hoping that throwing a Los Blancos reject into the deal can negate the need to splash out a further €10M.

The Portuguese side however want to bag all the cash they can for Di Maria, and have already identified his replacement in the form of winger Sebastian Leto, currently at Greek champions Panathinaikos. Leto would cost at least €10M.

As the World Cup prepares to get underway, Di Maria’s future appears to be anything but settled.
