West Ham United manager Avram Grant has persuaded former Aston Villa midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger to move to Upton Park, making a return to English football.

The 28-year-old midfielder arrives from Italy where an unsuccessful spell with Lazio saw him available on a free transfer. Only moving to Rome in January of this year, the German could not break through into the Serie A side’s first team and quickly became disillusioned with life at the club.

West Ham manager Avram Grant stated upon Hitzlsperger’s arrival: "I am delighted to welcome Hitzlsperger. We had to act quickly to ensure his services."

The Hammers are looking to revamp their squad over the summer and club owner David Sullivan remarked that the arrival of the German midfielder is just the start of a complete squad overhaul.
