30-year-old Xavi has penned an extension with Barcelona, taking his contract with the club to 2016. The new deal means the phenomenal midfielder will likely be hanging up his boots at the Catalan club, for which he has played since he was in the youth academy.
A statement on the club’s website read, “Xavi Hernandez has extended his contract with FC Barcelona until 2016, conditional on playing at least half of the matches in his final two seasons. His current runs out on 30th June 2014.”
Currently considered one of, if not the best, midfielders in the world, Xavi has been pivotal in the success of both club and country. 2008 European Championship Player of the Tournament, the 30-year-old will once again be vital if Spain are to succeed in the World Cup.
