The England squad has come under some harsh criticism from German football legend Franz Beckenbauer, who described the Three Lions’ display against the United States as having “little to do with football.” He went on to add that “in these times of haste, it seems as if England have gone backwards.”

Beckenbauer’s strong words came as a shock to many, with some now pointing at a probable meeting between England and Germany as the reason behind the 64-year-old’s remarks. Having coached a side to World Cup victory in 1990, the German is fully aware of the power of mind games, and is seemingly getting started very early.

The legend blamed the Premier League’s huge number of players from overseas as the reason for the nation’s disappointing form, saying to the South African press, “The British are being punished by the fact that there are so few English players in their teams. There are too many foreign players coming from all over the world and this has its impact on the England game.”
