Switzerland achieved the upset of the World Cup so far, defeating heavy favourites Spain 1-0 in their opening match. Few would have imagined the Swiss to even stand a chance against the mighty 2008 European Championship winners, but they achieved the unthinkable by holding on for a precious victory.

From now on people can stop their silly talk about us being favourites and winning this World Cup easily,” La Roja defender Gerard Pique said after going down to a shock strike from Gelson Fernandes.

Although Spain showed their extreme dominance over Switzerland in the match, the defeat emphasised that superiority alone is not enough to win games. The untimely loss swings Group H wide open, making for a very interesting situation early on in the tournament.
