Wayne Rooney was uncharacteristically quiet in England’s opening match against the United States, making the Manchester United star more motivated than ever to make his mark when he lines up to face Algeria on Friday. The influential striker has admitted he hasn’t been at his best since picking up an injury late in the Premier League season, but he is convinced he is returning to his best form at just the right time.
“Since we’ve come over here I’ve felt sharp and been flat out,” Rooney said to Fifa.com. “When I was playing well and scoring goals earlier in the season, I was sharp and hungry in training. That is how I feel at the minute."
Should the prolific goalscorer return to the magnificent form he showed in the Premier League, opposition teams will surely have a massive problem on their hands. At only 24 years of age, Rooney is also mature enough to not shy away from the responsibility that has been placed on him, saying, "I don’t mind not scoring if we win but I know for us to win, it will be more or less down to me to score the goals, whether it is now or later in the competition.”
