France’s World Cup campaign continues to be mired in crisis. Following the decision of the FFF (French Football Federation) to send striker Nicolas Anelka home for verbally abusing coach Raymond Domenech at half time in the clash with Mexico, the entire French squad has rebelled.
Les Bleus’ players refused to take part in training today in protest at the decision to send Anelka home. Patrice Evra delivered a statement to the press and coach Domenech stating their opposition to the decision to discipline Anelka and confirming that the entire squad would not train.
FFF managing director Jean-Louis Valentin has quit his post in response.
"I am disgusted, I am quitting my post", said Valentin. "They don’t want to train, it’s unacceptable. As for me, it’s over. I’m leaving the Federation. I am sickened and disgusted."
The French team appear to believe they can operate without following the rules of their coach or federation and it remains to be seen as to whether France will understand their actions or demand they never represent their country again.
