Real Madrid are considering alternatives to Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard as the Bernabeu club feel the England man will be overpriced. Talk emerging from Madrid suggests that Jose Mourinho is greatly impressed with Bayern Munich and Germany star Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Driving Germany forward at the World Cup, Schweinsteiger is under contract with Bayern until 2012, meaning any move for the 25-year-old would be sure to cost Real Madrid. Schweinsteiger is believed to have a buy-out clause of €55M in his contract according to Spanish paper AS.
Given that the Schweinsteiger option could then be more expensive that purchasing Gerrard from Liverpool, it may seem strange for the La Liga giants to go down that path. However, the feeling is that Schweinsteiger, being younger and already vastly experienced at the highest level, would represent a better long term bet than the 30-year-old Gerrard.
