Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba has offered his support to Chelsea team-mate Nicolas Anelka, who was recently sent home by the French Football Federation from South Africa, for making unacceptable comments to coach Raymond Domenech.

He’s been my partner in attack for two and a half years now, of course I support him,” the prolific Ivorian striker said on after his side’s 3-1 defeat to Brazil. “I wish good luck to Nicolas Anelka. He is in a difficult moment, but he is sturdy mentally, and a real competitor,” Drogba said, before adding, “Yes, I was surprised that he has been excluded.”

Anelka’s departure from the France camp has been followed by even more chaos, with the squad refusing to train in response to what they felt was an unjust punishment to the striker.
