With Ledley King out injured and Jamie Carragher suspended for England’s final group match against Slovenia, manager Fabio Capello has confirmed that West Ham United captain Matthew Upson will be called upon to partner John Terry in the heart of defence.

The 31-year-old featured regularly during the Three Lions’ qualifying campaign, and proved to be a capable deputy when Rio Ferdinand was out with various injury problems. With only Upson and the untested Michael Dawson to choose from to fill in the void in the centre of defence, it came as no shock that Capello has put his faith in the former.

The West Ham veteran’s record of having never lost an England match when partnered with Terry will have the Three Lions’ supporters keeping their fingers crossed for the streak to continue.
