Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed he spoke to disgruntled England striker Wayne Rooney last week to remind the 24-year-old to “relax and just enjoy” the World Cup experience. The prolific scorer has been a shadow of himself in South Africa so far, and the Scottish tactician believes it stems from “tension in and around the [England] camp.”

If there was any time for Rooney to rediscover his club form, The Three Lions will be hoping it is against Slovenia on Wednesday, where a win will secure a place in the knockout stages. England fans will be eager for Ferguson’s words to make an impact on the young striker, especially as the Man Utd talisman was exceptionally poor against Algeria in the side’s last match,

The Red Devils manager also reserved words for incoming striker Javier Hernadez, who he had nothing but praise for after scoring against France: “He did very well," Ferguson said of the youngster’s cameo display. "He showed good movement, speed and he sees space very well. I was very pleased with his performance."
