Having won their first two games against Denmark and Japan, the Netherlands have ensured their place in the knockout stages of the World Cup. Manager Bert van Markwijk is pleased with his side’s performances so far, but has reserved special praise for 35-year-old captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

“I’ve known Giovanni for a long time. I also worked with him at Feyenoord for a year, and he is a really good captain, but in his own way,” van Marwijk said to Fifa.com. “He is not someone who bosses people around and yells. He is a very quiet guy who has the respect of all the players, and that is very important.”

The former Barcelona defender, who has proven to be a real solid performer at the World Cup so far, earned his 101st cap for the Netherlands in his side’s 1-0 win over Japan.
