Following their shock exit from the World Cup after defeat to Slovakia yesterday, Italy boss Marcello Lippi has revealed that he never believed the 2006 trophy winners could repeat the trick in South Africa. Having finished bottom of a group containing Paraguay, Slovakia and New Zealand, an inquest is beginning back home into what was a disastrous World Cup campaign.

"I didn’t think we would win the World Cup, but I thought we would do better", said Lippi, going on to admit that perhaps he "failed to train the team well enough" and that they "weren’t ready for such an important match."

The Italians will now look forward to a future without Lippi and one which will no doubt contain large scale changes from the fairly old Azzurri squad that the former Juventus tactician took to South Africa.
