Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano is the subject of a tug-of-war between Spanish champions Barcelona and European champions Inter. The Reds are thought to be willing to allow the Argentina star to leave Merseyside as they look to raise both money to go towards the repayment of their massive debts and also to provide their new manager with some amount of transfer funds.
Liverpool are also, according to El Mundo Deportivo, not concerned about whether Mascherano heads to Barcelona or indeed to Inter to rejoin former manager Rafael Benitez. As long as both sides table acceptable bids of equal value, the English side will allow the midfielder to choose his destination. A price of around €25M has been mooted by both Barcelona and Inter.
All things being equal however, it is believed Mascherano would prefer to head to the Camp Nou for a variety of reasons including a preference for the city, the presence of close friends Lionel Messi and Gabriel Milito and the lack of a language barrier.
What appears clear though is that there is slim chance Mascherano will begin the new season at Anfield.
