Javier Aguirre has resigned as Mexico boss in the wake of their last 16 exit to Argentina. Having set a goal of at least reaching the World Cup quarter-final, Aguirre felt there was only one honourable course open to him, and that was to fall on his sword.

"It’s very clear, the coach [must go], it’s my primary responsibility. It’s me. I think I should leave my post."

Aguirre can still walk away pleased with his most recent spell as Mexico boss though, having rescued a qualification campaign which looked doomed under previous boss Sven-Goran Eriksson.
