Greek champions Panathinaikos are stepping up their transfer activity as they bid to make a real impact on the Champions League. The Greens are chasing two French stars in the shape of Sidney Govou and William Gallas, both of whom are out of contract.
Gallas could not agree a new deal with Arsenal to stay at the Emirates and barring a late U-turn in talks will exit the English club. The defender wanted a deal worth €94,000 per week to remain with The Gunners, but Arsenal deem this excessive. The Frenchman has already rejected a move to Juventus, but is thought more receptive to Panathinaikos’ advances.
Govou is coming to the end of his stay with Lyon, where he has spent his entire career. The presence of Djibril Cisse at the Greek giants is thought to have convinced him to try his luck in Athens and a deal for either two or three years should be agreed in the next two weeks.
With these two signings Panathinaikos will give their squad a real boost and they are determined to see off any challenge to their title from bitter rivals Olympiacos.
