Rumours are growing that Chelsea will make a real push to sign Fernando Torres from Liverpool. The Daily Telegraph reports that Blues chairman Roman Abramovich has flown to South Africa to do all he can to secure the signing of the Spaniard.
Yesterday Torres’s agent denied that his client was looking for a move away from Anfield and the striker himself has welcomed the appointment of Roy Hodgson as the club’s new boss. However, while Torres’s agent is quoted by Calcio Mercato as saying he expected his client to remain in England, he could not guarantee that it would be with Liverpool.
Chelsea are believed to have offered £50M for Torres, but Liverpool would want at least £70M before they would even begin to discuss the prospect of his departure. The sale of one of the best strikers in the world would be a bitter blow to Reds fans who are already up in arms at the club’s American ownership, and should Torres be sold a boycott of Liverpool merchandise which some fans are already engaged in would undoubtedly grow.
