Greek giants Olympiacos are moving close to snapping up Spanish winger Albert Riera from Liverpool. The English club announced on their website that Riera played no part in the friendly against Grasshopper last night because he is in discussions with the Athens side.
Riera was an outspoken member of the Liverpool squad when previous manager Rafael Benitez overlooked him last season. Indeed, Riera was pushing hard for a move to Russia in order to stake his claim for a spot in Spain’s World Cup squad.
The winger was hoping to be given another chance by new Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson, but the former Fulham boss has decided he is surplus to requirements.
Liverpool are hopeful the deal will go through, and Olympiacos’ coach Ewald Lienen has stated that barring any surprises Riera will soon be a Thyrlos player.
