Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has adopted a tough stance on Javier Mascherano after the Argentina midfielder expressed his wish to leave the club. Mascherano, who is unsettled at Anfield, is believed to want a move to either Barcelona or Inter, and with both interested, it is not expected to be too long before a deal is done.

Hodgson however has said that Mascherano will only leave when an acceptable offer is received and he cannot talk his way to the exit door.

"He’s made it perfectly clear. I think he wanted to leave a year ago and he wants to leave now. But he’s contracted to Liverpool Football Club, so whether he leaves or not is our decision.

"The mere fact that the player is a little bit unhappy with his situation and would prefer to leave does not necessarily mean he will leave."

The Argentina star has two years remaining on his Liverpool contract and it would seem he will only leave with Hodgson’s consent.
