Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has told the club’s fans not to expect many new arrivals at Anfield, declaring the current squad largely good enough for the upcoming campaign.
Hodgson’s comments are in marked contrast to those of former boss Rafael Benitez who was looking to add five or six quality new faces to the squad had he remained at Anfield. The new manager’s comments are also likely to raise the eyebrows of Fernando Torres, who also went on record as saying Liverpool needed to bring in several world-class players.
Liverpool have barely spent anything in this current transfer window and have seen Andrea Dossena, Albert Riera, Yossi Benayoun, Mikel San Jose, Andriy Voronin all exit the club with only Milan Jovanovic, Joe Cole and Jonjo Shelvey of any note arriving. The Anfield club are once again showing a clear profit on their summer transfer dealings.
Hodgson though remains defiant. "I don’t think I’ve ever said the squad is in need of a major overhaul", said the ex-Finland manager to the club’s official site. "We need to add one or two players to the team."
Should Liverpool, as expected, sell Javier Mascherano, then all eyes will be on what happens to that money. It can surely be less than a coincidence that Liverpool’s decline has gone hand in hand with making a profit in summer transfer windows.
