Real Madrid have swooped to sign Portuguese defender Ricardo Carvalho from Chelsea for a fee of around €8M. The centre back was keen to head off to pastures new and also held talks with Inter earlier this summer; the Italians though were not prepared to pay a fee for the player.

Carvalho will once again link up with Jose Mourinho, who brought the 32-year-old to Stamford Bridge from his successful FC Porto side of 2004.

For Carvalho the move allows him to finally experience the football of another big league. It was an open secret that the Portuguese defender was ready to move from Chelsea, but interest from Inter last summer came to nothing. Now Mourinho has moved swiftly to once again sign the Portugal international.
