Italian coach Davide Ballardini has emerged as a contender for the vacant manager’s role at Aston Villa. The 46-year-old was most recently in charge of Lazio and his stock remains high in Serie A.

Ballardini would welcome the opportunity to work in the Premier League, but is keen to return to football as soon as possible and, ominously for Villa, is also being eyed by a variety of Italian clubs. Reports in Italy suggest that the Midlands side have identified Ballardini as a serious contender for the job and are considering an approach.

The former Cesena player would be an attractive proposition for the English side given that as a free agent he can take up the role almost immediately.
