Liverpool’s Italian midfielder Alberto Aquilani could be set for a loan move back to Serie A. The former Roma star has struggled with injuries since he arrived at Anfield and had been hopeful of a run in the team under new boss Roy Hodgson. Aquilani though was left out of the squad which beat Trabzonspor in the Europa League 1-0 last night.

"At the moment we are considering possibly loaning him to an Italian club, but nothing is sure about that yet so I don’t have anything to report," said Reds chief Hodgson to the club’s official website.

Aquilani cost Liverpool £17M to sign from Roma last summer, but that transfer fee was installment based and the Anfield side are unlikely to have paid the full amount yet.

Hodgson believes that the midfielder needs first team football which he cannot yet offer him at Liverpool.
