Michael Ballack has been given a boost with the news that Germany coach Joachim Loew still considers him as the team’s captain; however, Ballack will still have to earn his place in the starting eleven.
Loew was speaking ahead of German’s Euro 2012 qualification double header against Belgium and Azerbaijan and his words will delight Ballack just as much as they will depress Bayern Munich full back Philipp Lahm. Lahm captained Germany at the World Cup in South Africa and has been vocal over his wish to retain the role.
"Michael Ballack is our captain", said Loew, before going on to warn the new Leverkusen midfielder that at present Sami Khedira and Bastian Schweinsteiger held the upper hand for the midfield role he covets.
