Liverpool fans were treated to a familiar sight yesterday at Jamie Carragher’s testimonial match against Everton as Gerard Houllier sat on the Reds bench. The former Liverpool manager made an emotional return to support Carragher at the game to mark his long service, but was not expected to sit in the dugout.
"It was a little joke between Roy [Hodgson] and I", Houllier explained to the club’s website. "I asked him if I could sit next to him on the bench and he said yes. I wanted to have that feeling again."
Houllier has been linked with to a return to management with Aston Villa, but yesterday all thoughts were on Carragher who saw over 34,000 people turn up at Anfield to watch Liverpool beat Everton 4-1.
