Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes, who has been outstanding this season, has admitted he may very well be enjoying an Indian Summer because he chose to retire from international football.

Scholes’ decision not to turn out for England for the last six years, which has meant summer after summer off and increased breaks during the season, has led many to speculation that is the reason he is still going strong at 36 years old.

And Scholes thinks it may indeed be a factor: "I don’t know whether I have hit the ground running because I have had some time off", the midfielder told BBC Radio Manchester. "But obviously it’s nice to have a break because you feel fresh when you come back. I also managed to stay fit throughout pre-season, which helps. Just having a run of games is a major factor."
